British tourist, 76, injured in hit-and-run outside bar in Pattaya

A British pensioner was injured in a suspected hit-and-run in Pattaya, Thailand.

Graham Hughes, 76, from Buckinghamshire, was leaving a bar where he had been drinking and playing pool when he was struck by a speeding motorcycle while crossing the street at around 12:10 am on July 7.

CCTV footage shows the tourist in a blue shirt walking out of the bar before a two-wheeler slammed into him. The motorbike zoomed away without stopping as onlookers called for help on the Soi Arunothai street.

Medics arrived at the scene and found Graham half-conscious with a dislocated shoulder and wounds on his leg. He was rushed to the Banglamung Hospital for treatment.

Thai local Pirawan, 41, said the Brit had been on holiday in Thailand for around two days before the accident.

The Pattaya City Police Station said officers were reviewing footage to identify the motorcycle rider, who had also dropped a sandal while escaping from the scene.

Police Colonel Nawin Sinthurat said: 'The suspect will be apprehended and questioned to find out why they did not stop at the crash scene. If they deliberately rode away, then they will be prosecuted.'

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
