Dozens of dogs that failed to qualify for working in the military were put up for auction in Thailand.
The Military Dog Centre in Nakhon Ratchasima province auctioned off 54 pooches that were rejected from military service and were looking for their forever homes on July 6.
Caretakers said the canines - six Labrador Retrievers, 30 German Shepherds, and 18 Belgian Malinois - were trading to be sniffer dogs chasing suspects through jungles and searching for bombs. But they were disqualified because they were 'too fat and slower to respond to commands' than the other dogs.
Staff assured the public that all the dogs were healthy and have received basic training, including putting on a leash, sitting, and crouching.
Of the auctioned dogs, a four-year-old female Labrador named Hilma fetched the highest price at 120,000 Baht.
The winning bidder, Kasanee Croskery, said she had travelled with her daughter all the way from Holland in the Netherlands hoping to take Hilma home with them. She said she got to know Hilma while visiting and playing with her at the dog centre many times before.
The other high-priced dogs were Evian, a female German Shepherd, aged four years and 10 months, that sold for 50,000 Baht.
Each person was only allowed to bid for two dogs, and was required to provide photos of where they will raise them, as well as having a leash, collar, and basket for each dog.
The funds earned from the auction will be used for military dog development and deposited into the designated account according to regulations set by the Ministry of Finance.
Also included were:
Brightman, a male German Shepherd, aged two years and four months, sold for 25,000 Baht.
Colby, a male Belgian Malinois, aged three years and three months, sold for 25,000 Baht.
Cindy, a female Belgian Malinois, aged three years and four months, sold for 17,000 Baht.
Hoffman, a male Labrador Retriever, aged two years and 11 months, sold for 15,000 Baht.
Sully, a female Belgian Malinois, aged three years and three months, sold for 14,000 Baht.
Deacon, a male Belgian Malinois, aged two years and five months, sold for 10,000 Baht.
Hogan, a male Labrador Retriever, aged two years and 11 months, sold for 10,000 Baht.
