An Icelandic tourist was found dead in his hotel room surrounded by beer bottles.
Gudmundur Kristinn Asgrimsson, 54, reportedly drank several litres of alcohol before collapsing at the Suvarnabhumi Ville Airport hotel in Samut Prakan, Thailand.
Hotel staff who came to check on the guest found his body lying next to the bed, with the room in disarray, on July 17 morning.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Damrong Sukchusri of the Bang Kaew Police Station said: 'An inspection of the bedroom found several bottles of liquor and beer cans.
'We speculate that the cause of death could be excessive alcohol consumption or underlying health conditions. However, we are awaiting the autopsy results from the hospital.'
Officers have examined Gudmundur's body and found no signs of physical assault. He is believed to have been dead for around six to 12 hours. Hotel employees said the tourist was often seen drinking beer in the premises, and had been renting out the room on a daily basis for about a month.
On the day his corpse was discovered, staff came to remind him to check out. They opened his room using a keycard, but found him lifeless on the floor instead.
Police said they have obtained CCTV footage from the hotel showing a heavily intoxicated Gudmundur leaving his room and being escorted back by hotel staff on July 16 morning.
He never re-emerged, and no one had been seen entering the room after.
Authorities said they were coordinating with the Embassy to notify Asgrimsson's relatives of his passing.
