A docked ship caught fire in a collision with another vessel as tropical storm Yagi battered the Philippines.
The M/V Kamilla was anchored in Manila Bay off Navotas City when it was struck by the LCT GT Express boat swept away by strong waves on September 2 morning.
The crash caused a fire to break out in the M/V Kamilla's bridge and forced 18 cadets onboard to abandon ship.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said in a statement that a tugboat rescued 17 of the 18 crew and took them to the Coast Guard Substation Navotas where a medical team provided first aid.
The remaining sailor who was separated from the group by the currents was saved by residents as he was swimming back to shore.
The PCG said three people were injured.
Firefighters said they would let the fire die out on its own as poor weather conditions made firefighting operations dangerous.
Superintendent Ronaldo Sanchez, Bureau of Fire Protection Navotas Fire Marshall, said: 'The waves are too strong, so we couldn't deploy our fire boats. Any time, the waves could become stronger and endanger our firemen.'
The PCG reported that four other vessels had run aground off Navotas City on the same day.
Yagi, locally named Enteng, is the fifth cyclone that entered the Philippine archipelago this year, enhancing the southwest monsoon and causing widespread flooding in the country's north central region.
Authorities said the storm left at least 14 people dead in floods and landslides.
Tropical Storm Yagi was expected to intensify into a typhoon later this week before moving towards southern China.
