A teenager who was eight months pregnant was zapped to death while trying to save her mother who was also being electrocuted.
Krisha Abon, 19, heard a loud explosion and rushed outside her house - only to find her mum Myrna, 49, sprawled on the ground in their backyard in Nueva Vizcaya province, the Philippines, on September 3.
Myrna had been cleaning the family's hut housing their outdoor water pump which had broken due to recent heavy rain from Typhoon Yagi.
However, she was electrocuted when she lifted an electric extension cable while sweeping.
Krisha with her swollen belly managed to pull her convulsing mother off the cable. However, she was said to have stepped in an electrified water puddle before falling over on top of the wire.
Neighbours hearing the commotion came to their aid and unplugged the power extension cord.
Krisha and Myrna were rushed to a hospital, but the younger woman was declared dead on arrival. Photos showed severe burns where her skin touched the electric cable.
Myrna also suffered burns. She was still recovering at the hospital.
Police Lieutenant Lary-Marn Paguirigan, Head of Investigation Section of the Diadi Police Station, said: 'It was found that the family's water pump had not been working for three days. It is possible that its electric line had been drenched due to the recent typhoon.'
Tropical Cyclone Yagi, locally known as Enteng, had been lashing the Philippines over the week. It enhanced the southwest monsoon and caused severe floods and landslides across the country.
The Philippine Office of Civil Defense said Yagi left at least 15 people dead in its wake.
State weather bureau PAGASA said it intensified into a super typhoon on September 5 morning while roaring over the South China Sea.
