French tourist, 37, killed in motorbike accident on Thai island

A French tourist was killed in a horror motorbike accident on a Thai island.

Jonathan Henri Zysermann, 37, from Paris, France, was reportedly speeding on his rented two-wheeler before crashing into a ditch on Koh Pha Ngan island in Surat Thani province, early morning on September 11.

Police officers on the island - best known for the debauched Full Moon Party - said they received a report at 4am. They arrived at the scene and found the holidaymaker lying on his overturned vehicle on the side of the pavement.

Police Major Arun from the Koh Pha Ngan Police Station said: 'The deceased was named Jonathan Henri Zysermann, 37 years old, a French national from Paris. When we arrived, the body was in a ditch on the side of the road.

'He was probably driving fast and lost control of his motorcycle and fell down. There was no other party involved based on the CCTV camera footage. We don't know if he was drunk driving. We have to wait for the autopsy results from the forensic doctor.'

Two days earlier, a young British tourist was killed in a similar road accident also in Thailand.

Billy Thomas James, 30, from Hammersmith, west London, was reportedly speeding without wearing a helmet when he lost control of his rented two-wheeler along a road in the popular Ao Nang area of Krabi on September 9.

Cops found him sprawled on a kerb near the Khlong Ying Suea Bridge next to his shattered and overturned motorcycle. The police report said he was covered in blood from a head wound.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
