Thai Navy SEALs used a basin to float a baby girl across severe floods in northern Thailand as the effects of Typhoon Yagi devastated the region.
Footage shows the officers wading through chest-deep floods while pulling the three-month-old infant in a basin across the deluge in Chiang Rai province on September 11.
The child was bundled up in a blanket as she was carried to safety amid heavy rain.
Royal Thai Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Adung Phan-iam said the Naval Special Warfare Command and Royal Thai Marine Corps rode Assault Amphibious Vehicles to the Mae Sai district, where homes were swamped due to the swollen Ing River that spilled into the residential area.
Rescue teams waded travelled through two miles of muddy terrain to reach the community.
Villagers in 10 houses, including the baby girl, were evacuated from the area. Local media reported that the evacuations were continuing today, September 12.
Northern Thailand has been battered by continuous heavy rain since September 8 due to Typhoon Yagi's influence.
Yagi, said to be Asia's most powerful storm this year, was downgraded to a tropical storm on Sunday morning, September 8. It killed at least 15 people in the Philippines before slamming into southern China and Vietnam, where it left at least 49 dead and 22 missing.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) had forecasted isolated heavy rains with gusty winds across the northern and northeastern regions as remnants of the cyclone strengthened the monsoon.
