Lightning strikes train station causing explosion amid typhoon Bebinca

This is the moment lightning struck a train station and caused an explosion during typhoon Bebinca in the Philippines.

CCTV footage shows the electric bolt hitting Gilmore Station of the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) in Quezon City, Metro Manila, on September 15.

The lightning strike caused a wire to explode and shower sparks onto the railway at around 9:44pm after the last train trip.

LRT-2 authorities said only Gilmore Station was affected and repairs were delayed.

Light Rail Transit Authority administrator Attorney Hernando Cabrera said: 'The damaged cable ran to around 230 feet (70 metres) so it took a while for us to do repair, plus there was still lightning early on. Of course, we also have to think about the workers' safety.'

Technicians completed repair work at 3:30am on September 16, before the first train trip at 5am.

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.

Tropical Storm Bebinca, locally known as Ferdie, killed at least six people after slamming into the central and southern Philippines on September 13.

It left the country on September 14 and hurtled into China, disrupting flights and trains as it hurtled into Shanghai on September 16 morning.
