This is the terrifying moment motorist drove over a road while it was collapsing.
Lorry driver Anuwat Srirod was coasting along Phahonyothin Road in Phayao province just as cracks were starting to emerge on the tarmac on September 29.
Dashcam footage shows Anuwat driving over the crumbling section of the highway marred by several fissures spreading across the ground.
He said: 'I could not brake in time, so I had to speed past as the road was collapsing. I was afraid it would collapse because the left side had already sunk.
‘I had to drive between the cracks so that my tyres would not fall into the gap. I arrived at a more stable part and looked back to see that the road had given way. I called the police to inform them about the collapse.'
The Phayao Highways Office said the sinkhole swallowed a 330ft stretch of road adding the subsidence may have been caused by recent heavy rain that eroded the land under the highway. The office said repairs may take several days.
The northbound section of Phahonyothin Road has been closed, and part of the southbound section was allotted for northbound traffic.
A sinkhole is a depression or hole in the ground caused by the collapse of a surface layer, often from the erosion of underlying rocks or soil. They can form gradually over time or suddenly and are commonly triggered by water erosion or human activities like drilling or mining.
