A British tourist was found dead in a hostel in Bali the morning after he pleaded with staff to have his room changed.
Thomas Richard Grieves, 32, from England, told his friend Anshar that he was feeling sick before retreating into his room at the lodging in Badung Regency on September 26.
He had reportedly planned to switch rooms the next day, but never emerged the following morning.
A cleaner, Komang Ari Triwarsana, 19, said she discovered Richard's corpse when she checked on the English guest at around 12:30pm on September 27.
She said she grew suspicious as he had still not woken up past noon. She reported to the hotel staff, who called police to investigate.
Ipda I Putu Sukarma, Head of Public Relations of the Badung Police, said: 'The witness tried to clean the room because the victim had actually wanted to move rooms. It was his own request the day before. The witness knocked on the room wall several times but there was no response.
'Suspecting something unwanted had happened in the room, she tried to open the curtain and was shocked to see the victim lying face down.'
Cops said Richard was found wearing black Nike shorts as he lay prone on the bed. His nose and mouth were said to have been leaking fluid mixed with blood. There was also discharge from his genitals and feces leaking from his anus.
Officials said there were no signs of violence found.
Inside the room, there were various medications and hygienic products, including Promag, Claritin, and facial creams.
Hotel receptionist Dayu Novi, 24, said Richard had talked to her the night before requesting for a room change.
She said: 'Yesterday afternoon at around 12:53pm, the victim's friend Anshar, who was also staying here, sent a message to the manager asking to check on him. The request was because the victim had previously admitted to not feeling well.'
Badung Police said they believe Richard was ill. He was taken to the Prof. IGNG Ngoerah General Hospital Denpasar for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of his death.
