A pretty South African teacher died from a suspected drugs binge while she was on a date with a British man in Cambodia.
Angelique Tong, 26, met charity worker Jack Pinion, from Grimsby, Lincolnshire, for a meal at Harry's Bar & Restaurant in the Riverside area of Phnom Penh on September 29.
The pair are said to have only known each other for a couple of weeks but Angelique, from Johannesburg, went back to Jack's condo where they relaxed in the swimming pool.
However, she is said to have started feeling unwell before Jack took her to his room. She was allegedly found dead the following morning.
Her worried friends - who were not aware of her death - made several appeals online for the ‘missing' teacher, who they said was uncontactable because her phone was turned off.
There was further panic when she failed to appear for work at the SmartKids International School in the capital on October 7.
Friends claimed to be working with police and the South African Embassy to find the young woman.
But police in the capital finally confirmed this week that the young woman had been found dead.
Sam Vicchika, spokesman for Phnom Penh Municipal Police, said that Angelique died on September 30.
The police chief said that the investigating team and a doctor had conducted an investigation of the scene and autopsy of the body.
He added: ‘Police doctors concluded that Angelique died of a heart attack related to drugs.'
The spokesman said that Angelique died at the home of the man she had been on the date with.
They had also interviewed the British charity worker and he was released without any further action being taken.
A private investigation agency that had also worked on the case, Crest Hawk Investigations, said the Brit had been 'cleared of any criminal involvement' and was 'not a person of interest'.
Angelique's body was taken to the local Buddhist temple, the Steung Mean Chey pagoda, where her relatives will collect her for repatriation to South Africa.
Close friend Tommy Nottingham said: ‘Our thoughts are with Angelique's family at this upsetting and difficult time.'
